Carb Blocker, A Solution To Weight Loss?

By Kristy Haugen Low carb diets restrict the consumption of carbohydrates. The difference between the Atkins and the South Beach diet is within the amount of restriction. The induction phase of the Atkins diet restricts most carbohydrates while the South Beach diet allows good carbohydrate consumption. These diets can really put ones will power to the test. Why? The human bodys primary source of energy is glucose. Glucose is derived from the breakdown or hydrolysis of carbohydrates that are consumed. Limiting carbohydrate consumption forces the body to use fat or protein as an energy source. Decreased carbohydrate consumption may leave you feeling tired and easily fatigued until the body adjusts to the change. The word carbohydrate arose because molecular formulas of these compounds can be expressed as hydrates of carbons which yield a basic carbohydrate empiric formula of (CH2O)n. Carbohydrates consist mainly of the combination of two chemistry functional groups: the carbonyl and the hydroxyl group. Carbohydrates exist in different forms such as monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides. Monosaccharides are usually called simple sugars. These simple sugars cannot be broken down or hydrolyzed into a simpler form (glucose). A complex carbohydrate refers to one or more linked simple sugars that require digestion for absorption. Oligosaccharides contain at least two monosaccharide units. Oligosaccharides may be referred to as disaccharides or trisaccharides depending on how many units of monosaccharides the compound contains. Maltose and sucrose (table sugar) are considered disaccharides. Polysaccharides contain many monosaccharide units. In order for the body to use polysaccharides, these compounds must be broken down into a simpler monosaccharide form. Examples of polysaccharides are starch and cellulose (fiber). Dietary carbohydrate digestion occurs mainly in the mouth and small intestine. During mastication (chewing) the salivary glands secrete the enzyme alpha-amylase which is referred to as ptyalin. Alpha-amylase briefly acts on dietary carbohydrates in the mouth to hydrolyze starch into simple sugars such as glucose. In fact, if you chew on a carbohydrate long enough you may taste sugar. This is a result of salivary amylase hydrolyzing the carbohydrate into a simpler sugar. Mastication increases the surface area of the food for alpha-amylase to act upon. This allows the enzyme alpha-amylase to work more efficiently in carbohydrate digestion. However, the food does not remain in the mouth for a long time so only a small portion of starch is hydrolyzed there. Once the chewed food has been swallowed into the stomach, carbohydrate digestion halts temporarily. This occurs because alpha-amylase is inactivated by the high acidic environment of the stomach. However, carbohydrate digestion will resume once the chyme (food mass and gastric juices of the stomach) enters the small intestine. The acidic contents emptied into the small intestine are neutralized by bicarbonate secreted by the pancreas. The pancreas will then secrete alpha-amylase to continue carbohydrate digestion. Carbohydrate digestion is finished when the mucosal lining of the upper jejunum and duodenum absorb the bulk of the dietary sugars in the form of monosaccharides. Now that we have a good understanding of what a carbohydrate is and the importance of the carbohydrate in the body, maybe an extreme low carb diet isnt the answer for weight loss. Extreme diets whether they are low carb or high protein can put the body to the test. Carbohydrates may be a necessary evil, but the body relies heavily on carbohydrates for energy. Instead of testing ones will power, using a weight loss supplement called a carb blocker may be a better option. Carb blockers are a weight loss supplement recently introduced into the weight loss world. Carb blockers claim to block the enzyme alpha-amylase. If the enzyme alpha-amylase is blocked, then carbohydrate hydrolysis is affected. By blocking the enzyme, you block the breakdown of the carbohydrate which affects absorption of the monosaccharide. How so? If the carbohydrate is of complex origin, the enzyme must be secreted to break down the carbohydrate into a simpler form for absorption. In theory, the carb blocker should indeed help to block carbohydrates from being absorbed. Phaseolus vulgaris is the active ingredient in carb blockers that comes from the white kidney bean. Phaseolus vulgaris interferes with the pancreas ability to secrete the enzyme alpha-amylase. Subsequent studies do prove that Phaseolus vulgaris does in fact inhibit the enzyme alpha-amylase. Carb blockers are another option for weight loss. However, permanent weight loss requires you to make changes to your lifestyle. If you do not change your lifestyle then no matter what diet or supplement you choose, weight loss is temporary and short lived. This also means that if you choose a low carb diet, make sure that this diet can be done. Many people fail the low carb diets because of extreme commitments. Freelance Work: The Changing Face of Employment

By Jesse Somer The world sure is changing, and if you look at job employment you will see what I mean. Let's just go back to our grandparent's generation, even though I'm sure if we went back further we would see very different structures of work in the tribal periods of our history. Our grandparents usually found a skill, and then used that one skill to work for their whole career. An example is my grandfather who was a salesman for the same suit company for 44 years. There is nothing wrong with this. His job was secure; he knew there would be a superannuating fund when he retired, and that there would always be food on the table for his family. These days in the 21st century things have changed, and they are still changing rapidly as we speak. Nowadays it isn't strange for a person to have around five completely different career paths in their lifetime. You might think that job security is much lower, but there are new types of jobs emerging everyday with the advent of modern technology. Older people can go back to schools and be educated in totally new areas that are greatly desired in society. One of the greatest changes in recent times is the fact that a lot of people are now working for themselves as freelancers from home. Society is still getting all the necessary work done, but the structures in which individuals pursue their dreams and goals in their areas of interest have changed completely. If you are working at home for your own business, you sure don't have the old hierarchy of bosses watching over your every move, judging your worth, and threatening you with dismissal. People are now self-motivated as they know that if they don't get out there and share their skills and attributes with society, they simply might be forgotten. There is a new way of acquiring work these days that is so very different than the days of perusing the job-ads in the newspaper or going door-to-door asking for work. Surprise, surprise, its on the Internet! There are now on-line marketplaces for both employers to offer work and for potential freelance employees to show their portfolios. There are many, but an excellent example of one of these sites is www.guru.com. On Guru.com once you have registered your portfolio for free, you can then bid for jobs that prospective employers have advertised. On the other hand, if you are an employer, you can go to the category of work you need done (E.g.: Creative Writing) and search through a list of professionals that you can then contact to do the job. These professionals exhibit the amount that they charge per hour, how much they have already earned through the site and a portfolio of examples of their work. They are then given a rating that has been compiled by the employers who have used their services. It is quite unbelievable; they've got people and job types from a multitude of different areas, just about any type of freelance work you can imagine: E.g. Website design, marketing, writing, graphic design, legal, engineering, photography, finance-the list is quite extensive. So you see, "the times they are a-changin'" my friends. Imagine if you were frozen in time one hundred years ago and then thawed out today. All the basic human beliefs and emotions would be the same, but how would the world look to you? We've got to go with the flow and not get lost in the structures of old. What's your goal? Get on the Web! Jesse S. Somer http://www.m6.net Jesse S. Secured Loans Versus Unsecured Borrowing

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=David_Woody]David Woody Loan advertising has really peaked in the last few years, it is almost impossible to read a newspaper or magazine without seeing a plethora of loan advertisements promising us that we can "clear all our existing credit now" or get "loans up to 25,000 regardless of credit history" or "loans up to 100,000 for ANY purpose", but what about the small print? If you check out many of these ads you will normally find a small disclaimer (usually buried at the bottom of the page) with the words "your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or other debt secured on it". This is a good indicator that despite the sales pitch in the main advertisement, this company is looking to sell you a secured loan, so what is a secured loan exactly? A secured loan, as the name suggests, is a loan secured against an asset, 99.9999% of the time this will be the home you currently live in. When your home is used as security for any borrowing a solicitor will be involved somewhere along the way to apply a legal charge on the property. This is applied to the property deeds and is a matter of public record ( this is to stop individuals having multiple charges on a single property, generally speaking only 2 charges are allowed legally, the first charge i.e. your mortgage and a second charge i.e. a secured loan). This charge gives the lender additional security over and above the contracted "promise to pay" in the signed loan agreement, this additional security can allow the lender to offer loans to customers with current or historic financial problems such as IVA, bankruptcy, CCJ's or decrees. Basically as long as there is sufficient equity in the property a lender can be pretty sure they will be repaid one way or another ( i.e if you do not keep up repayments on the loan they will recover the costs by selling your property!) The advantages of a secured loan therefore are that loans can be offered even to customers with adverse credit rates can be cheaper due to increased security for lender loan amounts can be up to 100,000 if secured on propertyBut what about disadvantages? you can lose your home if you fall behind with repayments! can take some time to organise due to legal involvement - up to 6 weeks will usually involve additional costs such as survey, legal fees etc though these are generally added to loan. So, why not arrange an unsecured loan instead? Unsecured loans are much riskier for the lender ( no security) and therefore the credit history and financial circustances of the borrower become much more important, basically unless you have very good credit unsecured borrowing is not an option. However for those with no credit problems, unsecured borrowing can be a very cheap source of funds with rates around 6% APR and up to 25,000 available per loan agreement. The other main advantage is the speed of payout, i.e. the time it takes from completing loan application to actually recieving the funds in your bank account, for an unsecured loan this can be completed in a few days rather than weeks in the case of secured borrowing. So, in summary, if you are looking to borrow 25,000 or less and have good credit, then apply for an unsecured loan at the best rate you can find online. if however, you are looking to borrow over 25,000 and/or have credit problems, then a secured loan or remortgage is the only viable option. How to Get Out from Under All that Clutter

By G. Gaynor McTigue Clutter is one of the most irritating words in the English language. It's synonymous with stress, because just looking at it can give you agita. The physical clutter soon becomes mental clutter. The problem is getting rid of it. It's a huge job, so you keep putting it off. But the more you put it off the more clutter you accumulate, making it an even more humongous task to face. Here are some tips, excerpted from my new book "400 Ways to Stop Stress Now...and Forever!," that will help you break the cycle. Throw something out every day. You've got too much stuff in your house. Office. Garage. Attic. Useless clutter that's weighing you down, getting in the way, obscuring the things you really need. Be realistic. If you're not going to use it, lose it. Every day, find one thing you don't need and toss it. Or give it away. Or sell it at a consignment shop. In time, the clutter will begin to vanish and space and order will magically appear in your home...and your life. Stick with this. It really works. Take ten minutes a day to neaten up. Here's another effective do-it-by-degrees strategy. Supplement your regularly scheduled cleaning by spending a short time each day neatening your home. Use those few minutes to clear a cluttered surface, tidy a child's room, clean out a drawer, dust a long forgotten place, put something away...or whatever obvious need is staring you in the face. You'll be amazed at how much this small attention to neatness can accomplish over time. And how organized and productive you'll become. And when you do get around to more intense cleaning, the job will be that much easier. You're probably awake at least 16 hours each day. Take just ten minutes of that time to tidy up. Store things out of the way. Take an extra moment or two to put things back where they belong. Why? Because you can bet that wherever you put them temporarily, they will soon be annoyingly in the way. So you end up moving the item two or three times, when you only had to do it once! More than that, things left out tend to reproduce (I swear they do) and multiply to the point where work surfaces and living space soon disappear. Nip those stragglers in the bud and haul them out of sight. Don't buy what you already have. This may sound obvious, but there are probably several duplicated items in your home right now...and you dont even know it. Or you do know it, because it was easier to find it in the supermarket than fish it out of your cluttered house. So before you go shopping, check to see that you dont already have what you think you need (the rear of the refrigerator, cabinets and closets are good places to start). Make a list of infrequently used possessions and where they're kept. Over time you can save a lot of money, and spare yourself a lot of clutter, just by keeping track of what you've already got. Clean out your closet. Why start each day on a sour note by having to confront an overstuffed, messy closet? How can you possibly figure out what to wear if all your clothes are crammed in and piled up like that? Free yourself of this stifling encumbrance. Go to your local home center and get closet organizers, racks and shelves that'll help you make the most of your space. Give away what you no longer need. Enjoy the convenience of having everything sorted and easy to locate. Wake up each day feeling relaxed, organized and in control. These should put you well on the way to a clutter-free, stress-free home. For more ideas, go to pickmeupbooks.com where you can get a free stress tip each day. G. Extraordinary Tailgating Recipes, Adding Spice to the Game

By Nicola Kennedy One of the great recreational activities is an exciting and fun-filled tailgating party. It's more than just drinks at the back of an SUV or a truck; tailgating parties are a big hit at any sports event. This is where everyone gets together to celebrate the game, or maybe just for a get together where all of you can have fun, share stories and laughter. But aside from that, no party is complete without food and drinks. Food is a very important part of tailgating. Make sure your food is in the Safe Zone. If you do not, end run will mean something completely different! The most important thing to stress about tailgating is keeping the food at safe temperatures. That is below 40 degrees or above 140 degrees. This means ice and a food thermometer are two of your most important aspects of tailgating equipment. Did you know that between the temperatures 40 degrees and 140 degrees, bacteria grow at the fastest rate? Therefore, the great thing to do is to make sure that you keep cooked meat to their proper temperature and you have kept cold foods under 40 degrees. High protein foods, such as meat, eggs and milk products must be stored less than 40 degrees. Melons should be washed on the outside, cut up at home, and then stored under 40 degrees until serving. And, the food should never sit out more than two hours if you are taking takeout or fully cooked food to an outdoor event. In addition, make sure to keep insects especially flies to stay away from your foods. Try to estimate how much food youll eat at the event. Taking home leftovers is not encouraged by experienced tailgaters. In the end, be prepared and plan. You might want to consider some of these suggested recipes. They are just simply great and delicious, a perennial favourite of many experienced tailgaters. For your main dish, grilled shrimp is easy to prepare. Peel shrimp leaving tail section intact. Pour one small bottle of Italian dressing in an 8 1/2 x 11-inch pan. Place shrimp in pan. Sprinkle a splash of teriyaki sauce on each shrimp. Lightly sprinkle garlic salt across the entire pan. For extra zest, splash lemon on shrimp. Chill in refrigerator for two - three hours to marinade, then grill for 10 minutes. Turn occasionally for browning effect. Do not overcook, as shrimp will get tough. For you beverages, you could prepare summer time punch. Mix 2 cups of water, cup powdered iced tea mix, 3 cups orange juice, 1 cup unsweetened pineapple juice, -cup grenadine, 1 ginger ale and the raspberry sherbet and add a champagne or white wine for extra taste. This will be great drink for your party. Finally, for your desert, try the apple peach pie. This is just easy: combine a cup of sugar, tsp of salt and 2 tbsp of flour. Then add 1 tsp of lemon juice, 1 tsp. cinnamon and the sliced apples. Add the top crust add seal around edges. Cut slits in top. Bake it at 425 degrees for 40 minutes and let it cool for 15 minutes. Before the time has come for the party to start and your friends to arrive, you are already done preparing the foods and drinks. All you have to do is sit back relax and enjoy. The Cure

By Christina Sponias Depression reflects the horrors that one passes through in their life, which makes us believe we can eliminate depression if we can eliminate all the horrors that exist on our planet. This is true up to a certain point, because if we cant fight against the horrors that exist in our environment, we cant hope to have a healthy society. We can only ever have a depressed and sick society, where many individuals dont have a chance of overcoming depression. However, its an illusion to imagine that depression wouldnt exist in our society if conditions were better, because depression doesnt depend only on external factors, but also on the function of each persons psychical sphere. A depressed person has to deal with a sort of insanity, because they are weak and vulnerable to all the absurd thoughts and tendencies that already exist in their psychical sphere. There is a huge part of everybodys psychical sphere that belongs to our wild conscience and sends us towards insanity... A depressed person can easily become crazy and abandon everything, committing suicide. We sometimes believe that there are logical reasons for a suicide, but there are only logical reasons for depression, not for the act of suicide. Suicide is an aggression against society. People that kill themselves also kill a part of all the people around them with their action. A suicide means terror for everyone near the suicider, because this person destroys the lives of those that depended on them. This is craziness! A suicide is never a logical solution, even though depression is a logical consequence of all the terrible situations we face in our life, because it can sometimes seem that we live in a hell governed only by violence and hypocrisy. A suicide is a very violent action, a crime against society, but it is also the reply of an individual that feels he is societys victim. Its the way he finds to show his despair to the world - and the world has to be considered partly responsible for this tragic end, because this absurd world pushes everyone towards depression. So, the aggression made by the person that commits suicide is also a protest against societys cruelty. A depressed person still has to fight against the suicidal tendency that provokes panic and despair, though. They definitely have a reason to be depressed there are terrible things in the world - but they have to resist reacting to depressions impulses. Otherwise, theyll lose control of their behaviour and perhaps commit suicide. The cure for depression is resistance. A depressed person has to do everything a normal person does, without staying isolated, responding with apathy to any stimulation. They need to be around people at all times, so that theyll be protected from suicidal thoughts that become worse when the person is alone. They also need to work, keeping themselves busy for a fair amount of time, in order to beat depression. A depressed person only wants to die, not to do anything, not to go anywhere. So, by working they are fighting against the tendency to stay in a static condition where they are gradually dying. This is very hard! They have to fight against a very strong tendency to become a lifeless statue. They have to work and care about their appearance, to do everything a normal person does, despite their desire to do nothing, despite their fear and all the other symptoms they suffer from. This is very important; it is the only way they can overcome their depression and be cured. If they abandon their efforts and simply let their disease dominate their behaviour, theyll suffer forever. We all live in a hell where infinite horrors frighten us constantly, but living in a perfect world (which cant be achieved only through political strategies, as many imagine) is not the solution for depression. A world with all the conditions for the development of everyones personality is more than necessary if we want to have psychical health. But this is not enough! We need much more - a global psychotherapy. Depression is not only a result of pressure and despair, but also an internal disease that provokes many absurd reactions that spiral out of control and beyond normality. Thats why a person has to try to be strong, keep busy and hold on in order to overcome the disease before it becomes too late. They have to behave like people that have a broken bone, and need physiotherapy in order to recuperate. This is always hard, and in some cases really impossible, but it has to be tried. The results are always positive, because if the person resists against all the diseases attacks through all the symptoms it provokes, they will often start feeling better after the long fight. The symptoms become weaker, until they disappear. Of course, everything is related: the environment, the persons personal life and their psychical spheres functionality. There is no guarantee that a person will really overcome their depression if theyll fight against its symptoms, because we dont know if the person will bear being so resistant till the end. In some cases the person has no power to fight, because the disease already destroyed their human conscience. For most cases however, resistance works like medicine and can really cure the disease! During my studies, I came across Carl Jungs method of deciphering dreams, which helped me and urged me to continue his research into the unknown regions of our psychical sphere. I set my poetry aside and began to compile my findings. I sought to prove that Jung had discovered the proper method of interpretation of dreams. This exercise actually taught me many things, and I continued to pursue Jungs research into the analysis of dreams. Differentiate or Die - 3 Keys to Eclipse Your Competition

By Dean Mercado Quite frankly there are very few ways to really differentiate yourself from your competition. You make a great product, so do they. You provide top-notch customer service, they do too. Worse yet, theres probably a competitor out there that already plays a bigger and better game than you. So what can you do about it? Well, here are 3 keys you can start applying immediately to differentiate and separate yourself from the pack:Positioning. Lets face it. People want to be associated with and buy from those they believe are the best. Back in the early computer days, there was a saying that nobody ever got fired for buying an IBM. IBM was believed by most to be the best personal computer available. Were they? Maybe. However, they were the perceived expert. Gaining this credibility in your field without a doubt tilts the scales in your favor. This is one of the greatest ways to magnetize your business and lead you on a path to create raving fans. Relationship Building. Consistently stay in tune with and in front of your desired audience - not hard selling, but relationship building. When you truly and genuinely have their best interest at heart, and believe me, they can sense it, you lay the foundation for an insurmountable bond to be formed between you. Remember, people buy from people, not, companies. The 180 Marketing Method. The crux of this methodology is simply to look at what your competition is doing and do something else. Dare to be different. The best way to successfully pull this off is to look into other industries and pioneer their successful marketing ideas and techniques in your industry. I hate to be the one to tell you but, most marketing ideas and techniques have already been done somewhere by someone. So why try to reinvent the wheel. Im not saying plagiarize here. Im simply saying learn from the success others have had before you especially by leveraging ideas and techniques that are new to your industry. Theres a great quote floating around thats attributed to both Zig Ziglar and Dr. Kenneth McFarland that goes something like this: There are no traffic jams when you go the extra mile." Applying these 3 keys will definitely get you traveling along that extra mile. So while most businesses are out there like lemmings playing follow-the-follower, I challenge you to step it up and dare to be different. Be a leader and go it alone on the road less traveled and I guarantee people will stop and take notice. 2006 Online Marketing Muscle -- All Rights Reserved. Goals - They Can Fight Your Depression

By CD Mohatta Depression is a small word but those who suffer from depression hate the very feeling. The life becomes a living hell for a depressed person. Nothing feels good. Nothing gives joy. One thinks of negatives. Anxieties attack from time to time and many times a depressed person stops caring about anything including life. It is indeed a very bad problem and with modernization, it is increasing. Doctors try their best to treat a depressed person with counseling and medicines, but what can a depressed person do to help himself or herself? Goals in life can help them. Let us examine. A human being is a goal-oriented animal. The mind needs a focus to target. Without a focus, the mind wanders around. Achieving goals gives a sense of self-esteem and satisfaction. This cannot be obtained anywhere else. To feel good because we have done something creditworthy is a great medicine. It elevates our mind. It gives us new vigor and new joy. When we feel good about ourselves and get assured about our abilities, it removes negativities from the mind. That helps fight depression to a great extent. Do not set very high goals. If you fail to achieve them, you will feel worse. try to set small goals that are achievable. After setting these goals, write them and keep the paper with you most of the times. From time to time, read the goals again and keep planning and implementing strategies to achieve the goals. As you begin achieving the goals, you will begin feeling good. How To Hire a Candidate On Contract Basis

By Tali Nizic Your search for a professional on contract/project is very different than your search for the full-time employee. Throughout the many years of my recruiting experience, I have collected feedback from employers and candidates alike. Fact: You will hire the candidate primarily because of their personality, chemistry and fit with the rest of the team and the organization. Hand the search over to a reputable staffing agency specializing in the placement of Accounting and Finance Professionals on contract and project basis. Once the agency presented you with the finalists, it is the interview that gives you the opportunity to watch the candidate present themselves at their best. It is the candidate's opportunity to make a positive impression on you. You will be looking to hire the candidate, which is able to "hit the ground running, and handle the task at hand while you continue with your work. Some of the reasons to hire someone on a contract basis: Your controller resigned, and year-end is around the corner. Your accounting manager will be going off on a maternity leave. It has been decided that it is time to upgrade the accounting software. There is a special project to get done within a tight deadline. And other circumstances, which do not require hiring a candidate on a full time basis. This is when you will hand the search over to a reputable staffing agency. One, which will do the leg work for you while you continue with your busy daily schedule. The Process: Invest an hour of your time and meet with the Search Consultant. It is important to understand your environment the personalities, which the candidate will be working for and with, and the skill set required to accomplish the task at hand. This one-hour of your valuable time will ensure that you will end up with the right candidate. As you are looking for an individual that is able to "hit the ground running", independent and does not require a lot of support, do not shy away from an over qualified candidate. The information was shared with the candidate and they are o.k. with the task at hand. Experience has taught us that the end result is a win/win situation. Unlike the search for a full time candidate where the emphasis in the final decision making rests with the longer term contributions of the candidate and how it fits with the organizational vision and structure. The candidate may not be 100% skill developed as of yet, however they have the potential to grow and develop within the organization. Hiring a candidate on a contract basis is of a totally different mind set. It is important that the candidate be able to "hit the ground running", have the right chemistry for the team and be able to perform the task at hand to your fullest satisfaction. To attract the right candidate, know your specific needs. Write down the roles and responsibilities of the position, so that when the Placement Consultant speaks with the candidate they will be able to screen themselves in or out. Make sure you know how the position fits into the organization, what skills, education and personality requirements are of the successful candidate. Know what your budget is. Decide whether you would like a fully designated candidate or whether a candidate working toward a designation, or one which has reached a certain level and gained hands on experience will be able to do the job just as well. These factors will determine your budget as well. Ask yourself: Are you getting the most suitable candidate for the task at hand? Does the level of remuneration match the candidate's previous work history? More importantly: Are you getting full value? We found that the candidate's commitment to the duration of the contract is of outmost importance. You want to ensure that the candidate you are hiring through the agency is 100% committed to the assignment, will not leave in the middle for a better opportunity. At the same time the candidate seeks a commitment from you as well. It must be clear for both parties that there is a start date and an end date. Extension of the contract is an option. During the interview, ask the candidates: " Are you looking for full time employment?" " What would you do in the event that one of these positions comes through for you during the course of the contract"? When committing to a contract term, do not make it too short. The candidate will be planning for their next position well in advance. As soon as you know that you will need the candidate for a longer term than initially agreed upon, let them know and work out the extension details. A successful interview is one, which is planned and prepared for. Keep the interview itself to no more than an hour long. It is important to assess the candidate's soft skills as well as potential fit within the organizational culture. Take notes during the interview. It will assist you in your final selection. Prior to making your final selection, discuss the business references obtained by the staffing agency you are working with. It is good practice to have obtained a minimum of 3 business references consisting of: direct supervisor, subordinate or external auditor. When working with a staffing agency, the candidate becomes an employee of the agency. As such, the hourly rate to you is an all-inclusive rate. It is the agency's responsibility to withhold all statutory deductions, or any other wage related costs. Always believe in yourself and trust the process! Importance Of Involvement In The Process Of Learning

By Sharon White For learning to be effective, practitioners need to understand, current thinking on how learningoccurs and the various ways in which adults learn. Learning can occur through observation and participation opposed toteaching through definition and theory, depending on the situation. How adults learn, is crucial to the whole learning and teachingprocess. This assignment will explore the teaching and learning process througha micro teaching relevant to practice. This will be evaluated throughpersonal reflection and linked supported by the relevant policies. The teaching process can be defined in many ways. A learningapproach/theory has been developed to cover each aspect, all of whichare outlined below. The behaviorist approach is more commonly known as classical andoperant conditioning and is based on a stimulus-response. Pavlov firstintroduced classical conditioning. He observed the behavior of dogsand their salivation at the sight of food. Pavlov deemed this anunconditional response. He developed this further and sounded a bellwith a meal and discovered the dog would salivate upon hearing thebell only. Pavlov called this a conditioned response. E.g. Food (US) ------------------------------------------Salivation (UR) - UNCONDITIONED TRIAL PAIRING OF FOOD WITH BELL Food (US) + Bell ----------------------------------Salivation (UR) Bell (CS) -------------------------------------------Salivation (CR) -CONDITIONED However, Skinner (1968) introduced operant conditioning. Skinnerexperimented with rats. He designed boxes for the rats, which housed amechanism that delivered food pellets each time the lever was pressed. In the rats' natural behavior, it makes accidental contact with thelever three or four times and food is delivered. After this the ratdemonstrates an intentional behavior. This indicates learning hasoccurred. Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow developed the Humanistic approach inAmerica in the 1960's in a reaction against the two other prominentpsychology approaches. The emphasis is placed upon the individual andthe stimuli, which motivates individuals to perform certainbehaviors. Maslow's hierarchy of needs demonstrates this. Bruner developed the Cognitive approach, in the late 50's and early60's. Bruner compared the mind to a computer, stating that we too areinformation processors. He studied the internal mental processesbetween the stimuli we receive and the responses we make. Cognitionmeans to know and the cognitive processes refer to the ways in whichknowledge is gained, used and retained. Cognitive psychology is themost dominant approach to psychology today. Constructivist learning approach is a follow on to the cognitiveapproach. However the emphasis is placed upon the individuals selfawareness and view on their own learning. Bandura introduced the Social learning theory in 1977. The theorystates that we don't merely learn through positive and negativereinforcement but through imitation. We copy another individualsbehavior due to identification - we identify with them andinternalize - you become the person. Bandura demonstrates this byshowing a group of children a doll being physically attacked. Thechildren were later presented with a replication of the doll and werefound to imitate what they had observed. A domain of learning approach was developed by Bloom in 1972. Heidentified the three stages in which learning occurs as the: Cognitive - knowledge gain Psychomotor - skill development Affective - attitude formation. Research and evidence has proven that no single theory can cover allaspects of learning. Classical and operant conditioningstress the importance of immediate feedback in learning to maintain apositive attitude to learning. However, Cognitive and the domains oflearning, enable clients to develop problem solving skills and theunderpinning knowledge of theory and skills. Each theory has pros andcons, determining which theory relates to your personal situation, will assist in effective learning. To demonstrate this, I will analyzethe learning theories and teaching process, in accordance withplanning and delivering my own teaching. Planning and delivering teachings, is a complex procedureincorporating many factors. If these are covered in a logical order, then an effective teaching with positive outcomes should occur. To ensure this occurs, a process known, as APIE should be followed. Ifyou Assess, Plan, Implement and evaluate, then your teachingseffectiveness is measurable. One of the most important factors is to decide what to base yourteaching on and identify your target audience, learning environment, barriers to learning and relevant policies. My teaching was based upon Cardiac rehabilitation with regards toexercise, targeting adults from a multi cultural society who were dueto be discharged from hospital following Coronary Artery Bypass Graftsurgery. In order to make my teaching suitable for the adult learner,I understood it had to be flexible, with regards to date and timing ofthe meeting. Use learning theories/ styles with the emphasis ondiscussion and negotiation and place them in control as thiscontributes to the fundamental system of life long learning. Recognizing the individual is also extremely important, as understanding their individual needs is imperative. According toHudson 1968, research has been carried out by psychologists tohighlight the different ways in which we approach and processinformation. However, due to the nature of the teaching, it wasextremely important for me to maintain a degree of control, inorder to guide patients through an uneventful recovery. I planned for the teaching to take place within the hospitaladministration sections seminar rooms, in a hope to reduce the numberof distractions and attempt to increase the individual's attentionspan and concentrate on planning for discharge. My teaching was linked to the following policies, National serviceframework - cardiac rehabilitation, NHS plan - working in partnershipwith patients and care delivery in the 21st century. The National service framework is the most prevalent. This details theneed for client education and stresses the importance of prevention (DOH 2000). The first four standards emphasize the importance ofprevention and educating clients with regards to healthy eating, increasing physical activity, reducing obesity and the percentage ofsmokers in society. Standard 12, discusses the need for educationprior to discharge for patients whom have been admitted and diagnosedwith Coronary Heart disease. With my target group and teaching environment identified, I proceededto identify potential barriers to learning, with communication beingmy priority. I had to ensure that English was spoken and understoodclearly amongst the patients, which in this case was; otherwiseprovisions for an interpreter would have been arranged. Ensuringpatients with a hearing impairment, would hear me, I would speakslowly, loudly and clearly and patients with a visual impairment couldsee me. Handouts would be made available in large print and onaudiotape. The less abled amongst the group would be accompanied bynursing staff. The seminar room was accessible for all, includingwheelchair users. Having covered all aspects of the initial planning stages, I devised astructured and detailed teaching plan incorporating the teachingmethods to be used and aims and objectives for the session. The aimsand objectives were to be specific, measurable, attainable andrecordable targets. I finalized the time scale for the teaching andall relevant handouts (copy enclosed for your perusal), well inadvance. I had the teaching proof read by an independent source, toensure it was clear and precise. Access to the seminar room, was arranged in advance, so I couldarrange the furniture accordingly and remove any potentialcommunication barriers (Maslow 1964 cited in Atkinson etal 1987)). On the day of the teaching, I arrived early, to ensure everything wasin place, greeting patients as they arrived, in attempt to put them atease. Once everyone had arrived, I welcomed them and explained who Iwas, exactly what my role entailed and what my plans for the sessionwere. My objectives were: 1. For the patients to understand what exercises they could do andover what duration. 2. Know the underpinning knowledge and the positive/negative effects. 3. For everyone to feel comfortable with one another and to askquestions at any time. The teaching followed an active format, with group participation anddemonstrations and knowledge at the same time. The teaching sessionwas based upon the Social learning theory and the cognitive approach. The social learning theory was most relevant due to its components ofpositive and negative reinforcement and imitation. When learningwithin the group situation, individuals often can feel intimidated byothers, however if all patients worked together, then they copied eachother, imitated and internalized with one another. This was a positiveoutcome from the participation perspective of the session, however thepatient or patients who began to stray from the exercise regime forexample, exercised more than was recommended, then their recovery hada possibility of being delayed and other patients sometimes imitatedthis behavior or felt belittled and depressed as they couldn'texercise as much or as often. In order to reduce these factors, positive and negative reinforcement were used. Patients were praisedon their achievements and progression and a more negative approach wasused to those who were straying from the programme although praise wasgiven for their commitment and enthusiasm. The cognitive approach wasused as a guide for ensuring the patients had the underpinningknowledge about the exercises. This approach likens the human mind toa computer, using a stimulus-response mechanism, also similar toclassical and operant conditioning. One hoped the patients wouldinternalize the theory given to them, which included exercises andpossible side effects if too much or too little was carried out andliken it to themselves with the response being any side effects theyincurred. The two theories were used accordingly as one thought the cognitiveapproach reduced the number of negative factors with the sociallearning theory. The pros and cons with each theory and found thesocial learning theory to be essential for group participation butdidn't account for individualization, which the cognitive processaccounted for. When used together, they supported my teaching styleappropriately. Not all theories work together, it is determining yourpersonal teaching style, target audience and teaching subject which ismost important and the theories are a reference. Having completed the teaching on Cardiac rehabilitation with regardsto exercise following surgery, feedback was received. The feedback wasof a written format from 7 independent clients, evaluating theeffectiveness of the teaching, including interest in the topic, eyecontact, information given and amount of client participation. Thefeedback was all of a positive perspective, especially highlightingthe motivation and interest shown towards the topic. Due to the feedback, received, being from a small proportion ofsociety participating in these classes, the results demonstratedcannot highlight a true reflection of the teaching. In order toachieve this, the teaching would have to be delivered to a number ofclients and other rehabilitation nurses from across the area forcomparison, however due to time constraints, this was not possible. If the teaching session were to be repeated in the future, one wouldhope to be able to capture a wider audience from within and outside ofthe healthcare profession, using current feedback to build upon andconstruct a more effective teaching. One believes the teaching, whichhas been delivered, was of a positive outcome as the focus wasconcentrated on demonstrating motivation and a high degree ofinterest, which was shown in the feedback. The ideal teaching would incorporate every aspect required, howeverdue to time restrictions and limited facilities it is virtuallyimpossible to deliver a teaching which is suitable to every client. The one solution to this would be to divide clients into groups, ofsimilar age, ethnic groups and physical and mental ability, howeverdue to equal opportunities, disability acts and race relations, thiscould never occur. One hopes this would never happen in the future asevery client brings something unique and positive to them to eachsession. We all learn from one another and one believes if anotherteaching were to be, carried out it would be improved, due toexperience. Having carried out the research and undertaken the teaching, theimportance of client education is extremely important. Governmentpolicies are beginning to highlight this loophole and healthprofessionals are beginning to visualize society in the future ifclient education doesn't occur.
